Polarization
In a genocide, polarization is when the groups try to separate themselves by law or propaganda. Usually this involves making laws preventing contact with the groups. In Somalia the polarization stage started in the very beginning of the controversy. The whole country of Somalia is divided up into clans, with everyone being in a large clan that is divided into sub-clans and smaller groups. President Siad Barre in the 1990's had outlawed certain clans from holding governmental roles. This had caused much distress and soon there was a clan that had gone against the President and forced him to step down from his position. This caused dispute between the now Former President's clan and the clan that had taken over. This had caused a civil war between the clans, leading to mass killings of many Somali people.
